We all have it off that catalogs often embellish plant description . phrase like “ elusive as nail ” and “ extremely audacious ” are so vulgar that it seems oddnotto see them associate with a plant . Once planted , many of these so - call “ unkillable ” plants are , unfortunately , anything but . To find oneself out which plants really do deserve a temper title , the faculty ofFine Gardeningplanted mathematical group of three dissimilar type of perennials ( touted by catalogs as “ highly durable ” ) in the bad produce conditions we had : in unamended soil , in the eye of a parking raft , with no extra care . We were surprised to see which ones thrived and which ones never made it past the first calendar month . If some of these plants could arrest their own despite a painful environment , just think how well they would do under slightly in force condition .

How we did the Trial

routine : Nine plant aggregate , three of each miscellanea

USDA Hardiness Zone:6

Conditions : Full Lord’s Day ; lean , well - drained stain

Care : The plants were deeply watered when they were first planted . Any water in the subsequent months come from rainfall . The average rainfall for those three months was 10.2 inch . Shredded - barque mulch was applied to suppress weed .

Duration : Three month , from late spring to early evenfall

‘Autumn Joy’ sedumlived despite dryness and deer

Sedum‘Autumn Joy’

Diseases or Pests : Deer browsed ‘ Autumn Joy ’ sedum in fall , when little else was left to eat in the area . But despite sustaining significant price , the plants persevered .

comment : This is one tough plant . When rain all but end in midsummer , ‘ Autumn Joy ’ did not falter . Despite the drought , the works still bloomed and offered up some good late - season interest group .

‘Moonshine’ yarrowmade a fourth-quarter comeback

Achillea‘Moonshine’

disease or Pests:‘Moonshine ’ yarrow showed signs of fungal disease when the drought of early summertime caused accent and then was followed by gamey humidity in late summer .

Remarks : Although it looked rough and most died back altogether after the first month , ‘ Moonshine ’ labor some new growth by the destruction of the time of year , giving some Bob Hope that it might recall the undermentioned spring .

comment : Rozanne geranium started out strong , flourish during the first calendar month of the trial . But as before long as regular rainfall cease , the plants dried up and choke . Only one of the three plants showed any signs of biography in fall .

And then a Year Later. . .

By the end of the first class of our stamina trial , all of the sedum plants looked like they were going to make it through with fly colors . The yarrow plant life had a gravelly summertime but seemed to be crusade new ontogeny by fall . The geranium industrial plant , unfortunately , expect mostly dead , except for one plant that had a few sprouts of life leave . Here is what we found the undermentioned spring , after a fairly balmy winter :

‘Autumn Joy’ sedum

All three plants survived.

‘Moonshine’ yarrow

Two plants survived, and the third was undersize.

Rozanne geranium

None of the three plants survived.

What to do if you don’t want them to Die

1.Amend your soil with compost to ameliorate its social organization .

2.Mulch for wet retentiveness and weed suppression .

3.Snip off most of the first - class blooms so that the flora puts most of its energy into develop a strong ascendant organization , not bloom .

4.Install lush hoses or trickle irrigation .

5.Provide some shady tribute , especially in midsummer .
