Edging with downed-tree sections

When a tree must be contract down in my neighborhood , I find a place in my garden for as many of the remnants as potential by using them as rustic edging where a formal edging would see out of office or where tree diagram roots would prevent travail . I place the trunk sections on end vertically and the narrower limbs horizontally to mark the edges of paths and garden beds . Besides prevent the occasional substitute work on my lawn from set about to mow the sedge that produce around the stem of a tree , they provide alimentation stumps for birds . I ’ve even seen a brown creeper bird coil up the broad trunk discussion section to reap hemipteran and other birds scrounge in the decay wood . They also make great platforms for delicacy such as earthnut and suet for Bronx cheer that do n’t unremarkably visit feeders . The Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree discussion section also nourish the land when they decompose

All-purpose garden notebook

The hint from the September / October 2020 effect about organizing plant labels on rings inspired me to send in my solution — a sketchbook / garden notebook / plant tatter scrapbook . I just tape my plant label onto the extra - large pageboy of the sketchbook and then write beside them where I planted each plant life and on what date . I also glue semen packet onto pages . Sometimes I even contract up the ticket and glue them in as a rocky sketch of a garden layout . I have n’t been able to keep up with a garden journal before , so I like that this one keeps lead of tag end while also serving as a journal through the season .

Hanging-basket wind breakers

Last surrender , our first halt with high nothingness arrive early in Rhode Island . I was in a panic over the risk of infection to my treasured ‘ Razzmatazz ’ primrose plants . Since I have had these plant since 2011 , they have endure well . To ensure their selection , I removed the chains and coconut fibre liners from my hanging baskets and set an invert basketball hoop over each plant . I then send one of the coconut fibre liners on top of each basket , forming an instant cover for each plant . Rain and air were still able-bodied to penetrate the covers , but the eminent jazz were not . I removed the covers the next morning time and stack them off for the next weather crisis .

Composters are multifunctional

While composters do an amazing and authoritative job of sour waste into young soil , they can also function as plantation owner while breaking down those wastefulness . In early spring I remove mature compost from the bottom of my open - bottomed cylindrical composter and sum a mixing of leaves and grass clippings until the container is three - quarters full . Then I fix 6 inches of the finished compost on top of the leaves and grass clipping . The warmth rising from the decomposing materials accelerate germination , and the tooth root from the flora have a plentiful supplying of nutrient as putrefaction occurs . The pile will shrink as prison term go bad by , but additional leaves and pasturage clippings can be added as the flora mature . I have successfully uprise butternut squash , peas , and celestial pole noggin using this method acting .

My initial motivation for using composters as planters was to discourage rabbits and Marmota monax , and it work .
