Cyn Cady
I have no problem admitting it : I made more than a few misapprehension in the garden this class , not the least of which was taking off on a monolithic , two - week road trip right before the Fortress Garden peak like mad . I essay pick blackberry last night , and when I saw all the distressing , shrivel fiddling berry I wanted to holler . Not that I would have miss out on my vacation , but jeez Louise , there werequartsof them dry out on the vine .
Other places I go down on it :

1. Too Much Diversity
I had too many love apple varieties , and not only did I recede running , but because I could n’t bear to restrict my choices , I overcrowd some of the plants .
2. Overpopulating
I really , really did n’t call for more than one zucchini works . Seriously , those things acquire about 3 inches a day and all you have to do is change state around and four or five more courgette on the spur of the moment appear .
3. Not Staying On Top Of Watering
Just a few missed days can really stunt plants — more than I would have expected . And because we ’re in a drought , I ’ve been a bit stingy . Not undecomposed . We do have a brand - fresh drip mould system now , so at least I ’ll be quick for next year .
4. Not Testing Soil
In some of my advance beds , nothing was flourish , but I just kept fertilizing and water without checking the territory . Duh . Iknewbetter , but my pH metre had break and I sustain forget to get a new one . Lame .
5. Not Harvesting In Time
For some rationality , this year all my St. Basil plants abscond really quickly . I went into some variety of weird denial — No ! They ca n’t be going to seed this tight ! I ’ll just hold off for the delicious juicy leaves!—and did n’t twitch back in clip .
Fortunately , some things in my garden did work , though abundance presents its own challenges . We have fantastic crop of apples , plum , pear tree and walnut tree come in now , and I have to look up to the fact that I ask a processing flora to deal it all . Here are a few varieties of veg that worked out really well :
I still have hopes for the Kabocha and spaghetti squashes , and a couple of the Rosa Bianca eggplants are looking middling good , too . I ’m keeping my finger baffle for a no - fail fall !
