I first learned the full term “ shopping in my garden ” from the author andpodcasthost Margaret Roach . As I plant my pots this twelvemonth , in an effort to fill them without going bankrupt , I went shopping at my localgarden centerAND in my garden . I bought fancyannualssuch ascaladium , flame nettle , andbegonias(boliviensis ) from the garden marrow and supplemented them with self - seeded annuals and perennials from my yard .

I also buy ‘ Dragon ’s Blood’beetseedlings to add maroon leaf to thecontainers . These thrived , and establish me tidy beets in September .

I am especially delighted with this inadvertent combination of plants , as several are self - sown ( aster and blackberry lily(BelamcandachinensisakaIris domestica , Zones 5–9 ) ) and the variegated redtwigdogwood ( Cornus alba‘Elegantissima ’ , Zones 3–8 ) was a holdover from the red branchlet I cut and insert into myholiday planterslast year , which then root in the pot . The begonia revived after a winter in my unheated basement , where I gave them no care .

I go for that some of these mind will inhale you , help you identify ways to utilise plant from your garden in your container , and save up you some money too !
