I am a stay-at-home ; I love my small farm in northeastern Ohio and prefer it to the most luxurious hotel or far - flung bed - and - breakfast the world has to bid .

Traveling for anything , let alone by myself , was normally out of the interrogation .

You know all the little things you have to prepare for : Is there enough grain to get the llamas and the Goat through my clip away ? Are the emergency vet numbers posted clearly ? Will my husband tell apart if something is incorrect with any of the animals ? Will the dog die of desolation without me ?

Holly Coleman is pictured here with her Tuscan lemon cake.

Without the boost of my daughter , Hobby Farms’managing editor , I never would have made the trip to North Carolina . But I am so happy I did !

As I loaded up the truck , I seek to lay these understanding to rest and focus on the playfulness thing I knew wait me : a calendar week full of cookery , suffer to see my girl and payload of fabulous fare !

As the miles ticked away , I could palpate myself relaxing as I choose in the beautiful scene ; the Benny Hill near Brasstown were very like to the ones I had screw and played on as a minor visiting menage in West Virginia .

A Sunday ArrivalI arrived on Sunday , bid adieu to my sisters who had been my route - trip chum and claim a deep breath .

Anything set in a place this spectacular had to be good !

I got a room to myself ( which was great as I work nights and incline to be wide alive at 4 a.m. ) in a scented little log cabin with a porch that ran along one side so we could ride and watch the sunlight countersink every evening .

When I walked from my lodgement to meet my instructor , I was struck by how quaint the School ’s buildings were and how breathtaking the flock were , all traverse in vivacious violent and jaundiced - forget tree .

My instructor , Jan Miles , promise to teach me how to make “ Gifts of Food ” – there were be five other students in the course with me – two from Georgia , one from Tennessee and one from Massachusetts .

I also take that there were 15 classes taking place that week cover everything from fly - sportfishing , stained glass macrocosm , wood workings , rug weaving , blacksmithing and music devising . I wanted to see if I could get my sis down there to take a form with me !

That night I toured the History Center , which chronicled the School from concept to confront . I also checked out the craft workshop as I needed a pelage – I forget how chilly it gets in the mountains when the sun expire down !

The First DayI take part in the aurora walk on Monday and it was wonderful – it was pitch dour when we ambled along , but there was something so soothing about shadow in the land .

I had breakfast in the communal dining room ( forgot about good old Southern grits ! ) and head off to my first daylight of category from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

We made ladyfinger cake , chocolate mousse in deep brown cup and chocolate leaves for decorating . I could already say I was going to acquire 10 hammering in just a workweek !

That even I attended a glide presentation about fly - sportfishing in Alaska . I had n’t ever regard rainfly - fishing , but it for sure looked like fun , especially because it was a arrest - and - liberation trip .

I made a cup of teatime , grabbed my torch and headed “ abode . ” A shower and time to read a few chapters of my book and it was time to climb into bed . As I drifted off to slumber , I wondered if my trend to stay on the farm might be waning just a minute …

Chocolate OverloadOn Tuesday ’s morning walk , we explored a part of the Folk School I had n’t been to yet : the summerhouse made by the framing course and raise garden beds ward by some really cool scarecrows made by local elementary school children .

Hunt Smith , a instrumentalist who toy the mandolin and guitar , as well as sings , allow MorningSong .

In form we churned out dark cocoa chip walnut meringue cookies , redneck cookies ( so easy and good ! ) , snowballs ( a macaroon with — what else?—chocolate inside ) and raisin cookies .

I thought I was going to lapse into a sugar comatoseness ! We pick out samples to the medicine students and the spinning class next door .

We were quite popular with the other students ! Many people who were tour the school block up in to admire our delicious creations .

After supper , I went to find out the square- , contra- and circle - dancing and even take part in one dizzying terpsichore .

It was so much fun to take in as many of the dancers were from the orbit and occur weekly to help in instruct the steps to those of us who are inexperienced .

After all the skillful food and entertainment , it was meter to go back and rest up for another ( delicious ) day !

Happy Halloween!I start my day with a refreshing wench - watch wage increase , but between the darkness and the frigidness ( it had frost overnight ) , very few birds were active .

We did see a Hero of Alexandria fishing in the brook , though ! Because of the keep up drought this sphere had experienced , the water in the brook was hardly make a motion .

The juiceless conditions also put a muffler on camping here — they were n’t let campfires for fear of forest fires .

Our walking misstep was so prolonged that we overleap MorningSong , so I eat a spry breakfast and headed off to class .

Today we made some non - chocolate desserts ( give thanks goodness ! Who knew you could get tired of chocolate ? ) like pumpkin cake , gamboge tulles and four - layer espresso cake .

We had not taste any of our bar yet , but we did try the pumpkin muffin and cooky . Most were pretty good — but some are not !

Our teacher loved teaching as much as we enjoy being instruct , which made me eager to get back to the farm to make homemade dainty for the holidays !

That evening there was a membranophone gathering and all of us were encouraged to participate by using a tambourine or similar melodic instrument that required only a signified of rhythm method .

I courteously declined as I had forgotten to pack my rhythm . Instead , I chose a specter walk to lionise Halloween .

There also was a death chair lambaste demonstration , but being play out , I it so I could go back to the cabin and rest period .

friend in TownThursday started bright and early on with the Rivercane Walk . This walk included several sculptures to honor the Cherokee Indians .

One that stand out to me was the Eagle Dancer , which was a alloy sculpture that portrayed the bird of Jove as a protector with dandy great power .

There was also a Clan Cane Pole , which signified the seven Cherokee clans . This place is really engulf in history .

MorningSong featured David Brose , who toy with us with lay and local legend .

A square breakfast was stick with by a full sidereal day of finishing the projects from the previous day . We also made fruitcake without fruit ( who knew ! ) , toffee cookie , a Tucson lemon cake and lemon bars .

We briefly foray into Brasstown to see the endowment shops and I decrease in love with a adorable bird print that would look just gross in my kitchen .

After houseclean the kitchen ( which was amazing and fully fit out with loads of counter distance , a hearth big enough to take the air in and outlets galore — something I wish my kitchen had more of ! ) , my daughter Sarah Coleman and Karen Acevedo , Hobby Farms’editor in chief , arrive for a sojourn .

It was so nice to see familiar face !

I take them on a spell of the garden where Karen had bring in the first place that year during the Fall Gardening class , the blacksmith shop and the gift shop . We all wipe out dinner party and then Sarah and I sat on the porch with cup of tea and watched the bodily process and meadows below .

Before we manoeuver home , we listen to a pick - up medicine , which was incredibly enjoyable as it brought back computer storage of my uncle play their guitars in West Virginia when I was a tiddler . How rapidly time passes .

A Fond FarewellToday we splice up all the loose ends we had leave in the kitchen and got quick for the grown Student Exhibit . It was so interesting to see what everyone else at the schooling had been work on on that week .

When my sisters come to pick me up to head back to Ohio , they surprise me with the little snort mark I had fallen in love with .

In add-on to the plethora of recipes , I now had something else to remember my trip by ; I look at that little chickadee every morning and am thankful for my family and friends — and for the John C. Campbell Folk School , which yield me back a objet d’art of my puerility , if only for a few days .
