Garden Bloggers’ Foliage Day.

In his ledger : Foliage Plants ,   Christopher Lloyd wrote : ‘ For it is an indisputable fact that appreciation of leaf come at a late degree in our education , if it comes at all ’ . I opine learning to love foliage is an produce taste , a bite like olives . As gardener , we go of with beautiful blooms and then gradually realise how much better they look if set off by lovely foliage .

Berberis thunbergii ‘ Golden Rocket ’ withAlstroemeria‘Ligtu Hybrid ’

This digitalis put itself here , which was very tasteful of it as it lights up a dark turning point and is perfectly matched with the genus Cornus .

The beautifully namedPolygonum bistorta‘Superbum ’ has now been changed toPersicaria affinis‘Superba ’ which is a shame if you have a infantile sense of humour . I have always referred to this plant life as ‘ Superbum ’ . Anyway , whatever its name it attend good turn with risque leaved Hosta . For some grounds these genus Funka by the big pond do n’t get eaten by slugs . Maybe the frog universe keeps them down .

Green is a Colour . By June , if we live in the country , we are surrounded by green . And how lovely it is . When I had a braggart garden I toyed with the estimate of making a small-scale enclosed garden , using just different tone , shapes and texture of green foliage . How calming and restful it would be . Here , I have n’t really got room to luxuriate such fancies , but when I look out of the window today , despite all the colorful blooms , I realize that what I have , is a green cocoon .

Landscape nurseryman let the cat out of the bag about using ‘ borrowedlandscape ‘ to heighten your own . aside from a glance of our honest-to-god church building column , I do n’t have any views to take up . But I have borrowed tree , in fact I am fence in by them .   We have the benefit of the huge cedar tree tree diagram and the birch tree in the older rectory garden . The tree on the left is anAmelanchier lamarckiiin our garden .

There is a modest forest at the bottom of the garden and so we are incredibly sheltered and the garden feel like a timberland clearing . On the other side of the garden , somebody has planted two Horse Chestnuts which are really too big for a garden , but they add to the feeling of privacy . But perhaps nobody planted them , it is quite probable that squirrels bring the conkers from the ancient Horse Chestnuts in the nearby Christian church yard .

With so many trees around we have plenty of birds . Up until a duo of eld ago we had nightingales .   Unfortunately they seem to be draw scarcer everywhere .   Another bird with a beautiful flute Sung dynasty is the Blackcap . I was sad to discover this picayune body lying on the terrace in front of the summer family .   He   must have fly into the   window .

I was surprised to find this little cuss in the greenhouse . He is a Goldcrest . I think they lived in pine woods . Goldcrests are Britain ’s tiniest birds .

Regulus regulus . Goldcrest

When we came here , the garden was very overgrown and neglected and I often wish that I had a clean canvas to work on . But of course , it is rattling to have ripe tree diagram like this weeping birch tree . I love the shadows and dappled subtlety .

The multi - caulescent tree diagram on the leftfield   in the next image is a mulberry . It has a tag on it saying that it was produce from a cutting of the historic   tree in the Greenwich Village .   This Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree   was regard as to have been engraft in   1550 by   Adam Winthrop , grandfather of John Winthrop , the first regulator of Massachusetts . Another tree diagram which lights up the garden in summer   with creamy variegated farewell is the largeAcer drummondii . It is lovely   to model in the spook of this Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree on a blistering summertime ’s twenty-four hours . It is not such a delight in the autumn when we have to clear up its leaves .

Acer platanoides‘Drummondii ’

One of my favourite shrubs is the Pagoda Dogwood , Cornus alternifolia‘Argentea ’ It has a lovely habit with tiered , horizontal forking . Burncoose Nursery state this is difficult to pass around and slow - growing . I propagated this from one in my old garden and I have been astonished at how fast it has grown . It is very elegant .

You do n’t often see the blue- leavedBerberis temolaicawhich comes from Tibet .

In the front garden a previous proprietor has planted the favorable philadelphus next to   a yellowPhlomis fruticosaalongside the driveway . I hate deadheading or prune this phlomis as the fine hairs make me cough .

On the other side of the drive there are two   silver - leaved   crying pears , Pyrus salicifolia‘Pendula ’ . Two seems a minute unreasonable to me , but never mind , they   make good climbing frames for roses . Up one , I have put   Rose ‘ Veilchenblau ’ which is still in bud and in the other   ‘ Felicité Perpetué ’   which has somewhat pinkish pompom flowers .

I have quite a few fern but the most showy at the moment is the Royal fern;Osmundaregaliswhich likes boggy soil .

Osmunda regalis

The next ones are   quite average , but they raise vast in the moist stain along the older wall . Last yr I incur an sure-enough brick path along here .

I love umbelliferous plant butAngelica archangelicaseeds itself a snatch too enthusiastically along here . This yr I have encounter two new angelicas with much more exciting foliation . One of them is calledAngelica sylvestris‘Ebony ’ and it as really dark violet leaf and stems .

Angelica sylvestris‘Ebony ’

The other one is calledAngelica hispanicaand it looks as if the leave of absence have been dressed with wax .

Another adorable umbelliferous plant is this one . I just ca n’t think of its name . I will   in all probability think of it in the middle of the dark . Meanwhile if anyone can cue me ?

In the sun this purpleness - leave alone salvia is always heart - catch .

I sleep together all your mature tree . Your garden has always looked quite large to me abut I suppose the definition of a small garden in California and a small garden in the UK are two very unlike things . One twenty-four hour period I ’d have sex to add a violet smoke tree to my garden .

So many very dear gunpoint here . I ’m a sports fan of commix and being creative with foliage – it can be just as fascinating as coloured blooms . In the shade , the effect is n’t quite as dramatic , but it can be quite beautiful if the forms and heights are as variable as the leafage color .

While a clean slating would be nice , your mature trees are wonderful . You are very favorable to have so many Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree on your neighboring properties as well because they make it seem as if your garden goes on as far as the eye can see . mythic foliage all but your blue berberis is specially gorgeous !
