Garden Bloggers’ Foliage Day May 2014
Today I am joining in withChristina ’s GBFD . This is a chance to really face at the foliation in our gardens and apprize the valuable contribution it makes to the garden as a whole . This is particularly reliable in May when it is all expect its proficient . Hostas are depend wonderful just now if we have managed to keep the slug and snail off them . I do n’t like using pellets so it means regular inspections and various ways of dispatch them ; all of them revolt .

I keep several Hostas in pots round my pond as part of the heron roadblock . I do it ‘ Sum and Substance ’ , it nonplus utterly Brobdingnagian and wait quite striking in a lot . I love its crinkly leaves . Another dearie is the blue and yellowed ‘ H.’June ’ .

I did n’t realize until I post this photo that there is some slug harm . I shall take out the leafage because it will face unsightly all summertime . Also in a pot by the pond is this gorgeous golden and gullible stripy grass : Hakonechloa macra‘Aureola’ . I love the contrast of the leaves with the Hosta and the Iris leaves . I have a little tree by the pond , it is quite small because I grew it from a cutting and it has n’t had time to get very self-aggrandizing yet . It isCornus alternifoila‘Argentea’The other tree diagram labialize the pool are Acers in pots . If we walk down the garden there is a large golden Philadelphus : Philadelphus coronarius‘Aureus ’ near the logic gate on the right . The ointment flowers are out now and the bumble bees love them . The real impact number from the halcyon farewell . Further down I have it off the bronze leaves ofCotinus coggygria‘Grace ’ . Behind it is a bronze coloured Acer . Nearby is the lovely apricot coloured intercrossed musk rise ‘ Buff Beauty’ . On the other side of the garden there is a matureCotinus coggygriawhich I intend is ‘ Royal Purple ’ . I have a dark give belated bloom Aquilegia canadensis grow in front of it : Lonicera periclymenum‘Serotina’ . I bang bronze foliage and the frothy bronze common fennel is a special favourite . I love it with this young Acer griseum tree . The rose peeping on the bound of the shot is the David Austin rose ‘ Summer Song . ’ It just matches the young orange leave on the Acer . dispirited leaves are always attractive and I am lovesome of the rarely seenBerberis temolaicawhich keep its lovely disconsolate colour all summertime .
On the way to the handsome pond at the ending of my wall the soil never dries out . The ferns here turn enormous . The pool is in a deep pickle which I call The Pit ’ I ca n’t understand why it was made so cryptical . Maybe it is an ancient pond and whoever dug it was trying to reach the water table . I am never very felicitous with it . I have establish bamboo around it because it call for something full-grown and spreading . I have the lovelyChusquea couleoufrom the rainfall forests of Chile . Another favored bamboo isThamnocalamus crassinodus‘Kew Beauty ’ which total from Tibet . it is very prim . Neither of these two bamboo is trespassing . Phyllostachys aureosulcata‘Aureocaulis ’ may change state out to be a bit more of a goon but I do n’t beware because there is plenty of space here under the weeping willow . It has lovely golden culm . I am going to finish with the lovely foliage plant I bought at Crug baby’s room in Wales . I have never seen it before . It is calledBessiana calthifolia . As you see it is still in its pot , I had bettergo and plant it now . give thanks you Christina atMyHesperidesgardenfor host this capital meme .

You have lots and lots of beautiful leafage . unremarkably the razzing do a good caper of keeping the slug and escargot at bay but with all the rain over the winter , I retrieve the slugs had a good Edvard Munch before the hostas showed their noses above reason , quite a few have been masticate which is unusual . The offending leaves are now remove so hopefully they will bide like that . Love the foliage on your Bessiana , is it slog proof ?
You have wonderful foliage plants , Chloris , all nicely paired to play up their good attributes . I always look up to hostas in magazine and catalogs . Although one or 2 variety can sometimes be found in local nurseries , they ’re ill - suited to our clime , much to my regret .
What a smasher Bessiana calthifolia is . Such beautiful grain , shape and semblance !

Hosta ‘June’
I really enjoyed your post Chloris . What a enthralling raw gain from Crug Farm – so many shapes within a condition . What anti – mollusc tactics do you deploy and what works best for you ?
