A gardener collects the best of this colorful group of plants
Back in the spring , Joe Koller sent in some photos of Alan Summer ’s Maryland garden and his over - the - top display of peonies and other early blooms ( read it here ) , and now he ’s back with some shot of the summertime look of the garden — with a focus on coleus ! Joe says that Alan has been call for and trail dissimilar coleus ( Solenostemon scutellarioides , Zone 11 ) for class , keep the ones that he likes and that do the best .
For plants like flame nettle that have literally thousands of different varieties on the market , lead the prison term to assay different ones each year is really deserving it , because you could find the fussy mixed bag that do the best in your mood and have the fussy colors that appeal most to you . Though coleus have to be grown as yearly anywhere with freezing temperature in the winter , it is very easy to take cut in the fall and overwinter your favorite in a sunny windowsill so you could plant them out again in the summer . For information on take cuttings of flame nettle ( or other annuals),check out this clause . To hear how to pinch back flame nettle to get a denser , bushier growth substance abuse , watch this video . We’ve also catch a rundown of some ofFine Gardening ’s very favorite flame nettle varieties here .
What are your favorites ?

The whole ingathering ! What a exhibit , and with color that lasts all summertime with no fuss .
I love this mating of container and industrial plant , with the in an elaborate way textured leaves echoing the design of the container .
A really monumental flame nettle . Displaying each mixture individually in potful like this really allow each one to show off .

Another view of the monumental pots of flame nettle sprinkle all over this terrace . It ’s unbelievable that so much diversity of color can come from just different varieties of one foliage plant .
This one looks to me like it might be the variety show ‘ Henna ’ . I love the jagged folio margins and the vivid colour .
