Celebrating one of the first flowers of spring
Today we ’re enjoying some hellebore photos from Nancy Mellen ’s Massachusetts garden .
Attached are pictures of some of the hellebore that are now in bloom in my gardens , which are just south of Boston . All but the bloodless one were donate by Burpee to five of Garden Design School ’s 2011 graduates , of which I was one , to be used in the garden we make for the Boston Flower and Garden Show 2012 . These hellebores are from the Heronswood Songbird series : multi-colour Bunting , Winter Wren , Starling , and Phoenix .
A endearing pinkish hellebore . Hellebores ( Helleborus×hybridus , Zones 4–9 ) are nearly all grown from semen , so each one is a little unlike . When possible , shop for them in person when they are in bloom so you may pick out the form and coloring that appeal to you the most .

A beautiful slating - green hellebore . These plants are enjoy for their toughness , deer resistance , and unusual colors , include green tincture in the blooms . The amount of green in the flower usually increases as the prime ages , so be certain to equate newly opened and old blooms to get a sense of what a works will look like throughout the bloom cycle .
Double hellebores are always popular , and I love the traffic pattern of colored spots on these flower petal .
Most bloodless false hellebore are distort with green , which micturate them no less beautiful . If you want a really complete white prime , seem for the speciesHelleborus niger(Chrismasrose , Zones 3–8 ) , which blossom very betimes and has saturated white flush .

In addition to great peak , many false hellebore have beautiful leaves as well . Often the varieties with the very darkest blossom also have leaves that emerge a wonderful dark purplish color . Usually the leaves fade to green afterwards in the season .
One charge with hellebores is that the blossom fall down . But it is always fun to get down and look up at the blossom to see the beautiful approach pattern . If you will always look down on your hellebores from above , be certain to shop for them establish on what the vertebral column of the efflorescence look like . Many varieties give a with child , colorful show , even though the flowers do hang down .
