Knowing that his young sept was growing and this potential would n’t be their forever home , Dan decided to use this small patch as his own personal test garden . “ On our slight spot , I have tried nearly 1,000 different types of flowering plants , bush , and small trees . I keep a tilt of my favorites that will one day be a part of our future gardens , ” he enounce . Through all of this experimenting , Dan discovered that many of the flora he was most drawn to go down into two category : unusual plants that are visually striking , and plants that attract and plump for pollinators . These selections have aid make a garden that is both beautiful and good , with favorites including Panthera tigris flower ( Tigridia pavonia , Zones 8–10 ) , false anemone ( Anemonopsis macrophylla , Zones 4–8 ) , ‘ So Successful ’ needle - leaf pincushion ( Leucospermum lineare‘So Successful ’ , Zones 9–11 ) , scarlet rosemallow ( Hibiscuscoccineus , Zones 6–9 ) , ‘ Jeana ’ garden phlox ( Phloxpaniculata‘Jeana ’ , Zones 4–8 ) , andcoral honeysuckle(Lonicera sempervirens , Zones 4–9 ) take center stagecoach .

While the plant trial extend to be a smashing achiever , Dan ’s small garden has become so much more than a space to experiment . With two daughters , Dan and his married woman also love making memories in their petite but big infinite . The girl specially like cull cherries and grape , dry lavender , planting seeds and bulbs , and even starting planting beds of their own . All the time spent gardening with his folk has taught Dan deterrent example that are n’t just applicable to outdoor infinite . “ On a practical level , this property has help me define what I see as the role of my garden , ” he explains . He has found the landscape is an extension of his home , another room to enrich his family living . Working his little patch has taught him how to bonk well , with forbearance , planning , intentionality , protection , consistency , and admiration . “ Many of the class of attention that are necessary for my garden are as necessary for my family , ” he says .
Dan has also learn that the locoweed is not always green in a cock-a-hoop distance , and what was once a dashing hopes might have been a blessing in disguise . “ Despite the comparatively small size of my garden , it can make considerable demand on my time through planting , weeding , pruning , deadheading , and the like , ” he says . While it can be easy to get lose in the job , he works hard to prioritise all the of import aspects of his life — even if that entail letting the landscape grow risky sometimes .
It ’s safe to say that when Dan and his family finally leave this small garden behind , it wo n’t be remembered as a space they were limited to , but as a special lieu where they were able-bodied to learn , grow , and heyday . Dan explains , “ We may never own acres and acres — and after seeing how much oeuvre 1/10 of an acre is , I do n’t retrieve I want to — but we found a kind of magnificence on our little plot of ground of land . ”

An engaging garden inspires every generation.Although he ended up with a smaller footprint than he initially wanted, Dan Pilla made the most of the space he had by growing over 1,000 species of plants. His young daughters are drawn to the many edibles that allow help-yourself snacking.

Take full advantage of the property line. With limited land to garden on, no potential planting space is left behind. This narrow expanse abutting a neighbor’s fence (below, right) was transformed into a trial garden packed with blooms from spring through fall (above). After 5 years you’d never be able to tell that the chain-link boundary still stands, hidden behind layers of foliage and flowers.
