Never a good thing during electrical storm time of year here in New England . of a sudden , just as a newsperson from NPR our local Boston place was report on the recovery in Joplin , Missouri , the theme was interrupted by the notorious EEEEEp - EEEEEEp - EEEEEEEEP of the National Emergency Broadcast system . commonly it was followed by “ this is a test , of the National Emergency Broadcast System , if this was an actual pinch … ” but woefully , it was . A twister was sighted , in fact two were sighted near our home in Massachusetts , and I was driving straight into the storm from the Confederacy , since I function an hour out in Providence , Rhode Island .
You may suppose that tornado ’s are rare in New England , but they are not . In fact , in until last month ’s Joplin disaster , our June 9 , 1953 Worcester Tornado , with winds estimated at 256 MPH was an EF5 , the res publica ’s deadliest twister destroyed my home townsfolk of Worcester , wound 1288 multitude and killing 94 . I was raised with this unrealistic ( or naturalistic ? ) tornado fear , since I was turn out ten class after the big crack cocaine , and even though it hit the northerly part of our metropolis , every time we drive through it , my dad would show us how all of the trees were go , and vivid contingent of the that foreboding day .

One tornado that just missed us , was rated an EF3 , and it move 39 miles before it rise just 5 miles from our house .
