SixOnSaturday

I had to scare off rhythm to take the photos for this Six , it was really insensate . Relatively speaking .   Down about freezing with a renowned wind quiver . Felt pretty chilly to this soft southerner !   Still , plenty going on in the garden . Mostly behave preparatory to next class but that ’s OK , it ’s what winter is for .   I should add that today is this blog ’s first natal day . Happy Birthday to me ! Totes emosh .

Anyhow , time for Six on Saturday . Six thing , in the garden , on a Saturday . Could be anything – a design , a pest , a success , a failure , a bloom ( if you have any … ) , some wintertime interest – anything at all . fall in in !

Here are my Six .

1 . industrial plant labels .   Your received issue white plastic plant label are all well and upright for modest plant pots but they run to get dislodged or sink very easily when used in open ground , in the borders say . I decided to pick apart up some more robust label using pallet rail . I find I can get 30 from one rail if foreshorten reasonably thin . This lot should keep me going for a while . They are paint with 1 coat primer , 1 coat blackboard paint . Once written on , I ’m spray them with a clear lacquer which should keep the rain off .   The lustrous one are   lacquered thus , but I ran out , must purchase another can .   Not sure how long they ’ll last once in the ground , but should be a while , the pallet runway are pressure treated hard - woodwind .

2 . Cotinus leave of absence . lastly this floppy self-justification for a bush is doing something useful , the leaf are turning a very lovely burnished shade of bronzey coppery pinky red .   I ’ll enjoy it while it go . Today in all probability – StormCarolinewill see most of them off , I expect .

3 . Virginia tree creeper . I planted this about 18 month ago then forgot about it . It is stuffed between the midget magnolia and the front of the family . My intention was to have it extend the paries where some dodgy plastering has made the render take care untidy . It has grown quite high in that time , maybe   15 foot ,   but has not spread much . I need to do some research . Perhaps I need to lop it back a routine to further some ramification .   It ’s usually a dreary greenish colour with a little varigation , it has begun turn of events .

4 . Phlox , cut back . As I speak out recently in the November BorderPatrol , I do enjoy a minute of late time of year border tidying . Here is a recently decapitate phlox lump , quick to live on the wintertime with 6 inches or so of stem left on . I ’ll chop up it right back to the primer coat in March .

5 . Manure . Yes , more manure ! I collected another 10 bag last weekend and have now mulch the long edge . I have more to do . It tidy thing up nicely , but is also good food for the soil . fall on worms , dig in !   I ’ve enough left to mulch Borders 4 and 6 , both relatively belittled . I might pop back and get another load before Christmas .

6 . Allium cepa set .   Part of my renewed focus on the veg patch , I have got a head start on next twelvemonth ’s onion plant craw . I could probably have put these ‘ Electric ’ sets direct in the priming coat , but as its a bit late to be start out these off , I decided to mollycoddle them a bit . They are in modules , in the greenhouse .   I ’ll plant them out in early March .
