Six on Saturday. Potted Pleasures.

July has been a scrap of a washout . But I ’m not complaining because I ’ve been spared time of day of lachrymation in my fresh planted garden . Still , I am trying to warm myself up with some fiery colours . Last calendar week , I was in the red and this calendar week I have some more reds and warm oranges in pots .

My first one is beautifulPetunia exsertawhich I grew for the first metre several years ago and wrote about on my blog . This year I am growing it again as it is a front-runner of mine and it has a story ; I love a plant with a tale . This specie petunia is so rare in its native native land ; the ancient and isolated pampas grassland of theSerras de Sedestain Southern Brazil that it is almost nonextant , like the Dodo . In fact maybe it already is nonextant in the state of nature and turn it just like take in a Dodo in the garden . It was only chance on in 1987 and in 2007 there were only 14 truePetunia exsertaplants in the wild . Of course , there are the usual pressures of loss of home ground and climate change , but the other problem for this dear piffling petunia is that it cross with the waste whitePetunia axillariswhich is one of the parent of our forward-looking genus Petunia . Actually , I have retrieve seed companies which listPetunia axillarisand next year I think I might try on it , as it is intensely fragrant and will go up if given support . apparently I wo n’t acquire it alongsidePetunia exserta . Mayan and Inca citizenry believed that the odour of petunias warded off life-threatening underground monsters and strong drink , so that is ready to hand . Petunia exsertais not fragrant as it is cross-pollinate by hummingbirds and that is why it is bright red , so that it will appeal them in maliciousness of being tucked aside in suspect nooks on rock . The efflorescence are virtuoso - form and the nameexsertameans externalize or hurl out and it touch to the extended stamen and stigma . I love it . It is well-to-do from seed , I just sow it thin in the flowerpot it ’s going to last in , so I do n’t have to bother pricking it out .

Next I have a common or garden hippeastrum which we all produce at Christmas and for some reason incorrectly call ‘ Amaryllis ‘ . I am not certain of the name of this one ; it ’s possibly ‘ Red Lion ’ , but it is such an acute red . I like the way it blooms on a short stem ; they usually have such Laputan giraffe neck . I have ascertain that when I get these bulbs to re - bloom they always do it in summertime .

I have lots of crimson pelargoniums in deal which I have accumulated over the years ; most of them with recollective forgotten names . But I always recognisePelargonium‘Paul Crampel ’ because of its huge undimmed red flower . This is a zonary pelargonium which look at the world by storm when it was introduce in 1860 . Nobody had ever seen such vigorous , shaggy-coated pelargoniums with such huge intensely scarlet flowers . It betray for a guinea each , which was a huge total ; about £ 110 in today ’s money . This pelargonium became a conversant sight as it was planted outside Buckingham Palace for many years . Today , it has perhaps been superseded by ‘ Moulin Rouge ’ which is even better , but I like a bit of account with my plant . This is just a young plant from a carving in the beginning this year but it will grow into a substantial works .

Rosebud genus Pelargonium also create a moment of nostalgia , especiallyPelargonium‘Apple Blossom Rosebud ’ which appeared in 1870 and was a deary of Queen Victoria .

The Rosebud pelargonium was not create by some sort of Frankenstein genetic use , it appeared as a spontaneous chromosomal mutation in 1850 . As you may imagine it was popular for buttonholes with its tight heads of double flower . I also havePelargonium‘Scarlet Rambler ’ which is a rosebud genus Pelargonium from 1870 . Both these rosebuds develop to about 60 cm . ‘ Apple Blossom Rosebud ” sustain on grow and bloomed all wintertime in the indoor garden . ‘ I chop ‘ Scarlet Rambler ’ down and keep it in the shed , so I am golden it survived . This wintertime it will occur into the conservatory . I do n’t know why it ’s call ‘ Rambler ’ because it is an upright one and does n’t ramble with me .

Mimulus auranticushas adorable orange , tube-shaped flowers . I find it has confusingly been renamedDiplacusauranticuswhich I might have trouble remember . But still , I refuse to call it Sticky Monkey Flower , even though it is embarrassing . This endearing works is smothered in flowers throughout the summer . It comes from California where it is pollinated by two sort of flies which have extremely farseeing tongues which can reach down its long cannular throat . I do n’t know whether we have any fly with long tongue here , but I take cuttings . This works has to be kept freeze free and quite dry in winter .

The orange floweredThunbergia alata(or Black - Eyed Susie if you must , ) flowers all summer long . I have it in a wad growing up the trellis in my surreptitious garden . I wish I had constitute it in the ground now , as it grows immense . It is usually treated as an annual but I put it in a pot because it can be perennial if it ’s kept frost devoid . This is a fast grow crampon which is leisurely from seed . you may get it in the more traditional yellowness with a black eye or bloodless or even pinkish . I have it off this Orange River one because it really radiate .

Oh darling , that seems to be seven plant , but I only includedPelargonium‘Rosebud Apple Blossom ’ to show you Queen Victoria ’s darling , so permit ’s not depend it .

That Thunbergia is indeed a real picture .

This postal service reminds me of how much I missed your posts when you went dumb for a stretchability . I make out the backstory of the petunia and , even though I ’ve never manage much for that genus , I ’d consider growing it to make the hummingbird felicitous . I recently send on the spicy colors in my really raging summer garden but yours are more lifelike . I ’ve been stress to tame Hippeastrums in my garden for the past few years – I accomplished that easily in my former garden but it ’s been strike and miss in this one , probably due to the drier conditions .

The Pelargoniums are beautiful . And that ‘ Orange Beauty ’ Thunbergia … wow ! It really does glow ! Beautiful exposure , too .
