Summer: Time to Garden Like a Boss

As I woke up this aurora , I know it was run to be a beautiful day here in San Diego , CA .   The cast iron skillet was sizzle with some heirloom onions and bollock from the farmer ’s food market and I attend outside my kitchen window to something that dismay me to my very core .

My backyard “ garden ” was looking perfectly hapless .

Summer ’s in full cut here and I hump it was time to give my backyard an epical start .   In this postal service , I ’ll be outlining exactly how I went about starting a summer garden in my backyard … and how you’re able to too !

Starting a Summer Vegetable Garden

Step 1: Figure Out Your Plant Hardiness Zone

If you ’re novel to horticulture , the word “ plant hardiness geographical zone ” might make no sense to you .   That ’s OK !   Here ’s what it means :

Ahardiness zone(a subcategory of Vertical Zonation ) is a geographically defined expanse in which a specific category of plant life is capable of growing , as defined by climatic consideration , let in its ability to withstand the minimum temperatures of the zone – Wikipedia

essentially , your plant hardiness zone rent ’s you know what types of plants you could grow establish on where you live .   That ’s it !

you may find your hardiness zona very easily by go to theUSDA Hardiness Zone Calculator .

I live in the fabled Zone 10B , which is one of the good zone there is .   I found this out , did a little dance , and carried on to step two – figuring out what the hell to plant in my garden !

Step 2: Find Out What To Plant

So you know your hardiness zone … now how do you know what plants you could grow for the summer ?   This is well-heeled .   A dewy-eyed Google search for “ geographical zone ( your zone ) planting pathfinder ” will give you some cracking resources . Here ’s what that search looks like for my zone .

Another alternative is to look for for “ ( your urban center ) master gardeners ” .   That will bring up the professional gardener high society for your city .   Browsing around their site will usually give you the precise template of what to found forcity .   This is cool because they fall apart your geographical zone into even more specific regions based on where you live in the city , so you’re able to get even better planting guides !

Step 3: Buy Materials

Based on my hardiness zone and planting template , I picked out a bunch of awesome veggies and fruits to grow .

Plant List

I went to the local greenhouse and picked up all of the seed , a few bags of soil amendment and compost , and seedlings of the plants that are bolded above .

full Cost : $ 80 for a garden that will produce hundreds of dollars of produce !

Sidenote : endure your local nursery when you may !

Step 4: Plant!

Before I could plant all of my seeds , I had to do some serious backyard garden rehab .   The bipolar weather condition in my city over the last calendar month or two caused me to neglect planting or cleaning up , so I had a flock of idle / dying flora and general muckle .

Here ’s how the process die :

After the cleansing , it was fourth dimension to implant .   I ’ll write up an in - profundity guidebook on seed space and planting in the futurity , but for now just go with what it says on the back of your seed package – it ’s unvoiced to go ill-timed with that advice .   There are little things you may do to improve your seeded player germination and overall yield , but the point is toget started garden , not worry about the particular !

An Awesome Start to Summer Gardening

This guide to starting a summer garden is pretty basic , but that ’s one of my gravid deputation with Epic horticulture : getting newer gardeners started without occupy about all of the crazy particular and gardening “ wiseness ” that ’s out there .   There ’s so much random entropy out there that it can prevent someone who might otherwise really love gardening tonot even begin in the first place .   Do n’t let that be you !

You ’ll make some mistakes , but that ’s the nature of gardening .   recall , we ’re actively naturalize live being for our own welfare … it ’s only natural that we mess up a niggling bit along the way .
