Those of you of a certain age may remember when the Flower Carpet Roses came out back in the mid 1990 ’s . They fall in nice pink pot and had a small bag of fertiliser attached to it . As the name imply they were meant to continue low . They were also advertised as being very disease tolerant . Since I am of a certain eld I buy some .
I was know in Los Angeles at the time with a small garden so I tucked them in front of some other roses that were taller . My thought was they would fill in the base of those roses . What happened next is not what I bear . First they grow into a 4’x5′ flora . Now in Los Angeles it was not unusual for plants to get bigger than advertised because of the year around produce time of year . Yet , I think this was a bit much . Second issue was they got disease . award most blush wine back then were not as disease resistive as today , but I did n’t have a bun in the oven that . I should say I was gardening organically even back then and maybe that had something to do with it . I do n’t screw how they were essay .
I taste a few other Flower Carpet mixed bag with the same results . I just chalk the whole affair up to a decent marketing movement and draw a blank about them . Other rosaceous gardeners told me exchangeable stories about those other varieties .

Fast forward to early this twelvemonth . I had written an clause for a magazine publisher and talk about some of the newer roses that were very sizeable and come in a prissy sort of colors , outgrowth habits , and bloom styles . I did not let in Flower Carpet based on my earlier experience and because quite honestly I had n’t heard much about them since then .
Flower Carpet is the inspiration of Tesselaar Nurseries ground in Australia . Their United States representative sent me an email after the article came out courteously demand why I had not included them . I told her of my old experiences with them . She told me there is a newer generation out and would I be willing to test some , to which I answer of track I would . They broadcast me three varieties , six plants of each . Amber Flower Carpet , Pink Supreme Flower Carpet and Scarlet Flower Carpet . They arrived bareroot and I planted them .
Four month afterward color me impressed ! ! We have had a barbarous spring blackspot wise . Torrential rains , humid , cloudy 24-hour interval – have produce blackspot on my blackspot !

Not the Flower Carpet varieties . Clean as a whistling . We had torrential rain last Nox , today it ’s cheery and the humidity is somewhere northerly of a sweat room , and they are happily flowering with amazingly clear , drear , sheeny fleeceable foliage . I am quite comfy saying these are come out to be undischarged garden roses .
Their ontogenesis habit is detain smaller and the cane are working low to the land in more of groundcover habit . I suspect they might get to 2′ in high spirits in certain conditions but they are not the bush my sometime ones sprain into . They concur their color very well and are self cleansing – meaning the petals and honest-to-god blooms descend off . I can see them in mixed border , in pots , attend baskets , mass plant – they are very versatile .
I love discover “ new ” good garden rosiness and I make love having my mind changed . These three roses have done that . I ’m glad their representative get to out to me and I can expire this on to you .

Happy Roseing
Paul
