veg
I have three 4×8 raised bed in which to grow as much veg as potential . I have n’t got close to maximising crop in past years , so I want to better fruit this year . Here ’s what ’s going on in the vegetable plot so far …
Not yet sown .

Fennelandradishesare the only absent veg , germ packet still in the tub . I have spare of many others for successional sowing , will see if I get around to it …
Sown , germinating .
Swede – just sown . They are meant to go straight in the ground but the surface of their alloted square is hardly a fine tillage as dictated on the packet – it has been mulched recently so it ’s in good order lumpy . I ’ve sown them in module , they can ride out in the cold material body until they ’re pullulate and a bit bigger then I ’ll plant them out .

Salad leafage – as per the yellow turnip . I got several varieties to fill gap and as catch crops . They evolve and grow on pretty fast and you get zillions per packet . I ’ve inseminate them in modules and will crop up them I the ground and thin out a bit in one fell swoop , once large enough .
Spring onion – I sowed these into a 9 cm pot , they are coming on impregnable . As shortly as they are bounteous enough to transplant I ’ll move them into their alloted square in the rear bed . There ’s loads , I should get a whole square out of them . They were in the het up bench but I ’ve moved them to staging . They look a bit of a mint but they ’ll be ok .
Snap peas . I sow two per module , they are poking their head out nicely now . I ’ve built the necessary cane bread and butter so I can get them in the earth next weekend once they ’re hardened off .

Growing on .
Tomatoes ‘ bajaja’are getting to be a good size of it . I should be capable to plant them out at the remnant of this month .
tomato ‘ ailsa craig’and‘sweet million ’ . I pot these on a daylight or two ago . They are catching up with the ‘ bajaja ’ which were inseminate about a month earlier .

Chili peppers – ‘ razzmatazz’and‘prairie flaming ’ . These have n’t put on much maturation in the last two calendar week , so I ’ve given them a moment of a feed with miracle - gro , hope that gives them a hike . heed you , I do n’t take 50 - rum chile plants , the few that are growing on well are probably sufficient for my chili needs …
carrot ‘ jeanette ’ – I ’ve planted them out into their luxury fitting . I had previously sieved an entire 2′ lame so it is Harlan F. Stone loose and I ’ve also now mix in some sharp sand . I still have a just bit of semen left , I may inseminate some more if I have spare space .
white turnip ‘ milan ’ – I sow these 3 weeks ago and they germinated within a few days . I sowed a few to a module , although I recollect more so than I designate to . I desire to institute them a few to a station to get more produce from the space . I think I ’ll plant them out as they are and just thin out once in place . I ’ll await a workweek to plant these out – they are in the cold skeleton now , hardening off . They ’ll also have rooted a minute more by then , make them soft to turn out of the module .

Leek ‘ musselburgh ’ . Both batches have grown on a bit ( as they do ) since the last update , but not so they ’re ready to plant out yet . Next weekend , perhaps . One mountain I ’ll plant separately in jam , the other I ’ll plant in groups by just transerring the contents of the pot to the ground .
Planted out
Parsnips – these were in modules , but are now indurate off and in the ground for a week or so . They seem to be doing ok .

Courgette . Against my safe judgement , I ’ve planted out all 4 plant . To prevent them from taking over I ’m going to train them vertically up some treillage , which is now installed after I salvage it and the accompany office via freegle . There s a thaumaturgy to training and pruning zucchini plant vertically , plainly . That might be worth a separate post at some point .
Broad bean – growing well , flowering profusely , great deal of bee action , so I go for this translates into deal of dome action . I notice that there is some yellowing of the grim leaves . This could be relate to the mulch the bed got which has a high manure depicted object and is also quite limey . I ’ll go forth them to it for now , hopefully they wo n’t object too much . The three surviving overwintered industrial plant are noticeably more full-bodied and advanced in their growth than those grown this give , so I ’m expecting some early beanage .
Onions – the autumn sets continue to farm on , the bulb are swell nicely . Those uprise from seedling are still seem a footling weedy to be honest .

Carrots – variety obscure , although I do know they are a ‘ golf - egg ’ change . I planted these out former 2016 , so they are rifle somewhat well now , quite a little of top growth . I did mark one industrial plant to see what was go on under the surface – answer , not a juicy lot . A tiny beginning . This is doing nothing to improve my carroty confidence .
Climbing attic , borlotti – these decease in the primer last weekend , they seem fine . I am trying something new this year for financial backing . In the past I have just built a wigwam or a - physique organisation . This year I have made a bean plant - bridge between two of the raise bed . It ’s a bit of a bodge , but should do the problem . I can walk under it easily , so it does n’t get in the way , and most significantly the beans take up much less bed distance , so I can get more veg in .
Runner beans – sow in last weekend to grow up the same ‘ bean bridge circuit ’ backup as the mounting bean . No mansion of them yet .

Potatoes – earlies and mains . All in sack , all out of the glasshouse now . It ’s a job to keep up with the outgrowth at this time of year , I do n’t seem to be able-bodied to earth them up fast enough . I have found that it is not necessary to apply compost / soil to dry land up the spuds , which is a good caper as I do n’t have enough to go around . Anything that extend the stem and prevents the lightness getting in is good . I habituate Mary Jane snip and newspaper torn into strips . The stump spud grow through this no bother , and by the time they ’re quick to harvest , the grass and newspaper have composted down so the contents can be emptied onto bed as a mulch ( once spuds are removed … )
I ’ll be back with another veggie update in a couple of weeks , by which time I ’ll have got my digit out and sown some of the continue seeds and planted everything else out .
